Background of the study:
Globalization has increasingly permeated all aspects of local cultures, including indigenous sports and recreational activities in Oron Local Government Area. Traditionally, indigenous sports served as a platform for community bonding, cultural expression, and the transmission of historical narratives (Ifeanyi, 2023). However, with the influx of global sporting trends and mass media, these traditional activities are encountering significant transformations. Globalization has introduced competitive structures, standardized rules, and modern equipment that often overshadow indigenous methods and rituals (Chinwe, 2024). As a result, local recreational practices are witnessing shifts in participation, public interest, and overall cultural relevance (Nkem, 2025). This study examines how globalization influences the perception, execution, and preservation of indigenous sports. By exploring these dynamics, the research aims to understand the balance between maintaining cultural uniqueness and embracing global trends, which is crucial for the community’s cultural identity and social cohesion (Amadi, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
The rising influence of globalization in Oron has resulted in a decline in the traditional indigenous sports and recreational activities that once reinforced community identity. Modern sporting events, backed by global media, have marginalized local games, leading to a loss of cultural significance. This situation poses a challenge in maintaining the heritage of indigenous recreational practices. The study seeks to understand the factors behind this marginalization and to explore strategies to revive and integrate traditional sports in the era of globalization (Okoro, 2023).
