Background of the study:
Globalization has increasingly permeated all aspects of local cultures, including indigenous sports and recreational activities in Oron Local Government Area. Traditionally, indigenous sports served as a platform for community bonding, cultural expression, and the transmission of historical narratives (Ifeanyi, 2023). However, with the influx of global sporting trends and mass media, these traditional activities are encountering significant transformations. Globalization has introduced competitive structures, standardized rules, and modern equipment that often overshadow indigenous methods and rituals (Chinwe, 2024). As a result, local recreational practices are witnessing shifts in participation, public interest, and overall cultural relevance (Nkem, 2025). This study examines how globalization influences the perception, execution, and preservation of indigenous sports. By exploring these dynamics, the research aims to understand the balance between maintaining cultural uniqueness and embracing global trends, which is crucial for the community’s cultural identity and social cohesion (Amadi, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
The rising influence of globalization in Oron has resulted in a decline in the traditional indigenous sports and recreational activities that once reinforced community identity. Modern sporting events, backed by global media, have marginalized local games, leading to a loss of cultural significance. This situation poses a challenge in maintaining the heritage of indigenous recreational practices. The study seeks to understand the factors behind this marginalization and to explore strategies to revive and integrate traditional sports in the era of globalization (Okoro, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the influence of globalization on indigenous sports in Oron.
  2. To explore the changing dynamics of recreational activities due to global influences.
  3. To propose measures for preserving indigenous sports amid globalization.

Research questions:

  1. How has globalization affected the practice of indigenous sports in Oron?
  2. What are the key factors leading to the decline in traditional recreational activities?
  3. What strategies can be employed to integrate indigenous sports with global trends?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Globalization significantly reduces community participation in indigenous sports.
  2. Modern media exposure negatively impacts the cultural relevance of traditional recreational activities.
  3. Community-based interventions can revitalize indigenous sports despite global influences.

Significance of the study:
This research elucidates the transformative effects of globalization on indigenous sports, offering insights for cultural preservation. It informs policymakers and community leaders on strategies to sustain traditional recreational practices while adapting to modern influences, thereby reinforcing cultural identity (Uche, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the impact of globalization on indigenous sports and recreational activities within Oron Local Government Area. It focuses exclusively on cultural and social dimensions without addressing broader economic or technological factors.

Definitions of terms:

  • Globalization: The process of increased interconnectivity and cultural exchange across national boundaries.
  • Indigenous Sports: Traditional physical games and recreational activities rooted in local culture.
  • Recreational Activities: Leisure practices that foster community bonding and cultural expression.
